Behnam Gholipour, an Iranian political analyst, spoke of a "historical contradiction" in the behavior of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ali Khamenei. He said, "Many of you don't know what Khamenei told Bashar al-Assad 14 years ago: 'If you make concessions and don't kill, you will be overthrown.'"
Now, he claims, these words have boomeranged on Khamenei himself. "Everything has been turned upside down," Gholipour writes, adding that "today, after 24 years of bragging and puffing up his cheeks, Khamenei himself has surrendered and begun a 'historic retreat.'" The analyst emphasized: "According to Iranian media reports themselves, he intends to abandon the entire nuclear program—in its entirety, with all its details and infrastructure."
Khamenei was unable to parry the strategic blow: "When the shadow of war looms over your head and you make such an unprecedented and enormous concession, the other side won't stop there." The reason, he said, is simple: "Because they simply realized you were truly afraid of war and surrendered."
The analyst then went on to elaborate on the US administration's logic: "Donald Trump's logic is simple. When your opponent lays all his cards on the table with a single threat, ready to abandon all 24 years of investment, why should you stop?" He added, "Why not take away everything else—missiles, regional influence, proxies?"
Gholipour concluded: "With this step, Khamenei not only failed to save himself, but he is proving to the entire world that 'pressure' is the only thing that truly works. This is the beginning of the end, because now everyone has realized that behind the loud slogans lies the absolute terror of collapse."
