Either it's

"Staring across the room", and the site is wrong, or it's "starting to cross the room", and the site is wrong.

They do sing "starting"

And they do indeed say "across the room" right after - But it's not necessarily perfect English. I have a feeling it means "starting (to feel something) across the room" or something of the sort.

The bottom line is

Don't try to understand Green Day. That can only happen by accident.

No it's not the same...

When people say "gonna" they just use a slang that derives from speech. Saying "I gonna go there" is being completely wrong, it's not common at all. Regarding "starting across the room" - again, this cannot be "to cross". It doesn't make sense and I'm wondering if you're certain that it's the meaning.

Do tell me who this "professional"

was? Maybe "starting a'crossin' the room", but I don't really recall Green Day being hillbillies.

I think that was the point, no?

i see it as

starting on the other side of the room... as in "ok, we're starting to run/walk/ whatever) across the room
