The Mango Room
My friends here introduced me to Caribbean food, great discovery, but my experience with Caribbean food here was only in small local restaurants and take away. I was looking for a nice trendy Caribbean bar restaurant to get some atmosphere aswell. The Mango Room is a modern Caribbean restaurant (not a bar) so it had some modern converted along with traditional dishes. Design & atmosphere – disappointing. Just a normal restaurant with some background reggae music and African paintings on the wall (which was the only reminder to blacks there). Interesting menu, which included traditional dishes, some fusion of Caribbean/European dishes, and some non Caribbean. We went for a mix of the first two options and had: Starters: soup of the day (pumpkin soup) and for me (Anat, I think you’d better sit first), Grilled Scallops on Melon Salsa OH MY GOD! 3 pieces of soft, fresh, slightly grilled scallops on fried apple slices and melon salsa (thinly chopped melon and onions) Main course: Creole Snapper Fillet with mango and green peppercorn sauce – a very interesting combination of tender fish and a sweet delicate sauce. Curry Goat – one of the most famous Caribbean dishes, had it with the traditional rice and peas and some fried plantain - a bit like banana (in looks) but different (in texture and sweetness). For desert we shared a Banana and Mango Brulee. It was very nice, but sounds much more interesting than it actually is – just a regular brulee with pieces of banana and mango inside. Excellent food, very slow service (probably got the Caribbean rhythm….).
