They often tell you what to call them

One of my former professors insisted on being called Dr. I am not a Professor, he said.

Another former professor asked to be called Dr. + her first name. When I continued to call her Dr. even after she was no longer my professor, she asked me to drop the Dr. and to call her only by her first name.

I know seasonal lecturers who ask to be called professor even though they only have an MA.

I also know TAs who insist on being called professor even though they do not have that title.

Calling someone Dr. when they have a PhD is usually more acceptable than to call them professor, unless they are your professor or when the title is indicated on their profile.

With Dr. you are always correct.

of someone who teaches a major course, has a PhD, but adamantly refuses to be referred to as Professor. It can be an individual preference.

As far as TAs who only mark papers and do not teach, some ask to be referred to as Professor, while others are fine with being called by their first name.

It is regarded as respectful to refer to your professor as Professor, but when I contact the Principal of a College who is a professor, but not my professor, I always refer to him as Dr. and not as Professor. I find that you can never go wrong with Dr.
