Mariah´s $37m deal

Mariah´s $37m deal From correspondents in Washington 10may02 POP diva Mariah Carey, who was paid $US28 million ($52 million) to quit her record label Virgin following an album flop, has signed a new contract with Universal Music Group. "Mariah is an international treasure, and when she became a free agent, all of us at Universal saw it as a one-time opportunity, since artists of her calibre seldom become available," Vivendi Universal´s Doug Morris said. Citing sources close to the negotiations, The New York Times today said the Grammy Award winner had signed a $US20-million ($37.2 million) contract with Universal. She will receive around $US7.5 million ($14 million) apiece to make at least three albums for the company. Universal has also agreed to collaborate with Carey on her other endeavours, including films and online projects. The 31-year-old pop singer, who shot to superstardom in the 1990s, has had more number-one songs than any other artist, with the exception of musical royalty Elvis Presley and The Beatles. She signed with Virgin last year after leaving Sony, but her first and only album for the label, Glitter - released alongside her flop film of the same name - sold just two million copies, a far cry from the sales of her past chart-toppers. She was dropped by the company in January. Source: Sunday Times (Australian Newspaper) http://sundaytimes.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,7034,4291095%255E10431,00.html
