JON LORD WITH THE HOOCHIE COOCHIE
JON LORD WITH THE HOOCHIE COOCHIE MEN' LIVE AT THE BASEMENT 2003' dvd details In early 2003, having played his final Deep Purple shows in Britain six months before, Jon Lord flew out to Australia to take part in a couple of special performances of his "Concerto For Groups & Orchestra" with the Australian band george. He was also scheduled to do some "solo" shows, revisiting a number of his solo albums, but for a variety of reasons these were pulled. Rather than spend his time sunbathing, Lord quickly teamed up with ex-Rainbow bassist Bob Daisley, and instead embarked on a short rhythm and blues tour with Daisley's band. After some intensive rehearsals, during which Lord revisited his own r'n'b past as a member of the Artwoods back in the sixties, they began wowing audiences in Australian clubs, though it was hard to know whether the crowd or the band were enjoying themselves more. Naming themselves The Hoochie Coochie Men, the line-up of Jon Lord / Bob Daisley / Tim Gaze / Rob Grosser / Jim Conway worked out a lengthy set during which they payed homage to many of their blues heroes, people like Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Howling Wolf, Elmore James, and Jimmy Smith. They also covered tracks by the likes of Johnny Winter and Cream, and peformed a couple of more contemporary compositions written by Daisley's own band. Jon Lord hadn't been free to play Hammond like this for years, and for fans of the keyboard player's awesome skills on the electric organ, the shows were a dream come true. Happily for those unable to be there, the cameras were rolling and a stand-out set from The Basement Club in Sydney, Australia on February 7th 2003 has now been edited and mastered for release on DVD.
