I've wrote a short essay

As I was ordered by the book, on the impact of the computer- pros, cons :) please fix me ,but don't relate to the content, The computer’s impact on our lives: The computer has definitely changed our lives in many ways. For start, non of us can imagine the advanced researches techniques which we use and elaborate today without the powerful computer systems help. Furthermore, many tasks from our day to day lives have became much easier since the computer had been invented. For example talking with cellular phones, using elevators, and so forth. Even though, we shouldn't rely on computers alone but on ourselves aswell. A great disaster can happen with computer systems that have a critic effect on our lives if we do not have the ability to operate them by ourselves. Moreover, if we keep designing computers to think for us with any opportunity we have it would probably decrease our thinking abilities in the long run. I’m not sure about (if we do not have/if we won’t have) Thanks

computers can't think like us

what you wrote about computers thinking like us is incorrect. I can elaborate if you want me too. Ilia, Bachelor of science candidate Neuroscience University of Toronto

ok...

Computers are programmed to do things that we can do. Things such as solve mathematical equations, store coded information or solve logical problems that can be explicitly described by a formula. The way they do it, however is completely different. Computers use a model called serial processing; they process every single piece of information once at a time. That means that if you program a computer to look at a scene and identify exactly what the objects present are, it will take a very long time to complete the task. Humans, however do the same things instantly- instead of just seeing a bunch of light frequencies that strike our retina we perceive objects. We can even recognize objects if we see only parts of them. The way we call the brain mechanism is called neural networks. We believe that what happens is that different nerve tissues work on different things at the same time so we can perceive stimuli very quickly. This is why computers can be programmed to try and achieve the same results as humans but they’re still useless at object recognition (which is important if you try to analyze a satellite picture). simple eh?

Thanks. What about making a computer that will have a "human brain", how far are we from that?

as much as i know

we do have artificial intelligence, only it's very bad. theoretically computers will never be as good as humans simply because they work on a completely different principle. a specialist in computers <my girlfriend Ron, you probably know her as eietmo> told me that computers work on strict formulas and cannot decide for themselfs. the only way they can decide is by a formiula. you can ask the specialist <again my gf Ron or eietmo> for more details. although there are quite a few psychologists that claim that our actions are predetermined by our environment it is still a vague issue <u can research about Skinner and his theories if you want to> practically to make a computer that will work as a human we first need to completely understand the brain <there are still many things we don't understand> and then to find a way to make a mechanical device that will work on the same principles. How much time will it take? i dont think humanity will last long enough for us to do that, but meh, who knows?
