FOX may or may not have come up with the idea, but the network of "24," "Prison Break" and "American Idol" has been the most willing employer in recent years of a scheduling strategy that reduces or eliminates reruns of a given show. In addition to running "24" and "Idol" without reruns from January to May, FOX will try to limit the repeats of several more of its shows too. The network is planning to keep "The O.C." and "Prison Break" in original episodes as much as it can, through either late starts or midseason breaks, and will do the same with its new series "Vanished." "Will we have strictly nonstop runs? No," FOX Entertainment chief Peter Ligouri says of those shows. "But we are going to have way less interruptions than the competition." As it did last year, FOX will open much of its fall lineup in late August or early September, several weeks before the Nielsen-mandated start of the TV season. Those shows, which will most likely include "Prison Break" and "Vanished," will air for a month or more prior to resting for the major league baseball playoffs. "American Idol" and "24" will stay in their now-familiar pattern of premiering in January and running straight through the spring. After airing without reruns for much of the fall, "Prison Break" will rest in early 2007 before returning in the spring, much as it did this season.
