“Angels – it’s what made me what I am. I was going nowhere when that came out.” He started writing the verse during a drunken lost Christmas in Dublin. The line ‘down a waterfall wherever it may take me” came into his Guinness pickled mind as he stared at a water feature outside the pub in which he was drinking. “At that point I had completely lost myself and became this person that was just floating about … lost, worried, scared. Angels both described, and was the catalyst of his salvation. “I’ve always believed in spirits, in spirit guides. By right, I’ve done loads of things where I really shouldn’t still be here. It was a homage to those spirit people.” It is the song that in many ways remains at the centre of his career. “It’s become its own thing, separate from me now. I’m well aware it’s the most played song at funerals and weddings. I suppose it’s a feature of modern life that we want to believe that we will meet again, or are being looked after, or that something or someone somewhere is believing in us for our greater good, and I think that struck a chord in a lot of people. I believe I’m not the only person that believes in angels.” Those are the words of Robbie Williams, trying to verbalise what his song Angels mean to him. It is probably THE most played, most requested RW song in the world. It is the song that, no matter how many other brilliant songs he writes, will always be the song that “defines” Rob. Angels was the start of his meteoric solo rise to fame as a solo artist after the split from Take That. The song was written with Rob’s song writing collaborator Guy Chambers in under 30 minutes, and they could never guess the far reaching echo’s of the song - Its’ one of Rob’s most famous and most loved song, some even call it Rob’s anthem. Angels was released in 1997, and entered the UK chart at no. 4; a humble beginning for the song that was a turning point in Rob’s life. The song spent 27 weeks on the charts and also made another 2 appearances on the chart in 1999 at no. 57 and in January 2001 at no. 71. In a UK based VH1, Angels was voted the song that should have topped the charts. The song is regarded a classic in the UK, and rightly so; a song sung by one of Britain’s most loved sons. Angels was also awarded a special Brit Award in 2005 for Best British Song over the last 25 years … a mean feat for someone that most people thought would be a one hit wonder. I’ve heard Angels on the radio for the first time a few years ago, and instantly fell in love with the song and the artist that sung it so beautifully. In fact, I bought my first Rob CD "The Ego Has Landed" just for that song! It’s a song with beautiful lyrics; there is nothing complex about them at all. Angels is a song that does not leave you untouched; it resonates with something inside of you, leaving you to feel blessed and loved. “And through it all, she offers me protection, a lot of love and affection whether I’m right or wrong …” The song has a special meaning to many people of different walks of life. For some it was a confirmation of true love at wedding receptions, for others it was words of comfort when a loved one was laid to rest. It makes one feel hopeful that no matter what life throws at you, how difficult the road may be, there is always someone out there that will reach out and uplift you again. No Robbie Williams show can be complete without a goose-bump inducing rendition and sing-along of ‘Angels’, at the end of his concerts. It is a song that marks the end of a wonderful and spectacular evening, and leaves concertgoers in awe at the raw power and emotion of a song. Seeing Rob get emotional when he sings this song with so much emotion, with such conviction, is something that we’ve seen so often over the years, and yet … it still leaves us amazed that an artist can be so touched by his own lyrics. I personally think each time he sings Angels, it is a gentle reminder for him to look back at where he was, but better yet, how far he has come. “Angels … it’s a really good song.” Indeed it is. מעולה
