Backstreet Boy Goes Solo Member Brian Littrell makes an unexpected move to the world of Christian rock. Brian Littrell is still the same Backstreet Boy who danced around onstage during his Millennium tour five years ago. He still has the same blond hair and blue eyes, the same chiselled jawline, and that laid-back personality fans love. But Brian’s a very busy man these days with a new solo album, a new BSB album, a new charity and a new toddler. Despite the hectic lifestyle, Brian told FASHION18 it’s quite easy for him to stay grounded. While in town promoting his new album Welcome Home, the Christian rocker chatted about BSB gossip, his beauty regimen—who knew this boy-bander exfoliated?—and why he’ll always find time for a rendition of “Backstreet’s Back.” FASHION18: This is your first solo album. What made you decide to release a Christian-rock combination? Brian Littrell: I grew up singing in church, so going back to my roots is very important to me—it’s part of who I am as a person and where I got my start. F18: Your album is entitled Welcome Home. How did you come up with the title and what was your biggest inspiration? B.L.: Welcome Home stems from the title track “Welcome Home.” I wrote it in Vienna, Austria, on the Never Gone tour with the Backstreet Boys. I was missing my wife and my son and wanted to write a song about where I was in my life. Lyrically, it talks about my relationship with my dad, my son and my heavenly Father and this CD from top to bottom is a homecoming of faith for me, going back to where I started before becoming a Backstreet Boy. F18: With the release of the Backstreet Boys’ new album Never Gone, how are you able to separate the boy-band image from your new one as a Christian-rock artist? B.L.: It’s not something I focus on separating, or try to separate. I am just being who I am as a person and growing each and every day. There is a label that comes with the Backstreet Boys, but the Backstreet Boys are still doing what we love to do, still making music after 13-and-a-half years. F18: Do you have a secret beauty routine? B.L.: I use Nivea products. I have to have my face wash and my conditioning lotion for my face. That is the only beauty tip I give because I don’t have many. F18: Who would be your dream musical collaboration? B.L.: Elvis, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra. F18: What are you listening to right now? B.L.: The Backstreet Boys’ new record. Also, songs that have been submitted for the Backstreet Boys’ new record. It’s always good to live with a song for a while to see if it catches or sticks. But I have my own CD on as well. F18: What is your favourite karaoke song? B.L.: Richard Marx’s “Right Here Waiting.” F18: What would you bring with you if you were stranded on a desert island? B.L.: My wife and my son and a lifelong supply of oatmeal squares. F18: Kevin Richardson, who first persuaded you to audition for a musical group, has been rumoured to be leaving the Backstreet Boys. How will this affect the band, and you as an individual? B.L.: I’m sad and I’m disappointed just because of the fact that we have been together for 13-and-a-half years and touched a lot of people’s lives musically, and shared a lot of first-time memories with people. I wish he would stick around and lend his voice on a CD and to be somewhat a part of it. On the other hand, I also respect his decision, as he is in a different place in his life and wants different things other than being a Backstreet Boy. F18: Tell me about the Brian Littrell Healthy Heart Club for Kids. What made you decide to create this nonprofit organization? B.L.: It provides knowledge to families about how what they put in their bodies directly affects them inside and out. Through the club we have created this environment of “knowledge is power.” Taking care of the heart is so important and something that I continue to do each and every day. The club is about providing that knowledge and power and wisdom for kids to take hold of their life and stay active and be active. F18: With your children’s organization, the Backstreet Boys, your new album and a possible tour, what keeps you grounded during all of the chaos? B.L.: It’s easy for me to stay grounded because of where I came from, because of the things that always have been, and always will be, important in my life. And the things that are important in life you make time for. Being a husband and a father are things I make time for; being a man of faith is something I make time for; being a Backstreet Boy and a solo artist are things I make time for. I don’t want to be remembered as Brian Littrell from the Backstreet Boys. I want to be remembered as that guy who was an amazing talent, an amazing father, an amazing husband and a man of faith. That is what I want to be and what I want my legacy to be—that is what keeps me grounded. F18: Any words of wisdom for your fans? B.L.: Don’t be afraid to stand up for what you believe in and what you feel strong in. Everyone has opinions and instead of life gobbling you up, go out there and take charge of it.
