הפעם אחד מהתקופה האחרונה. Have Oasis finally got it right? Nearly a decade after they came within an inch of conquering America with "Wonderwall," Liam and Noel Gallagher are bigger than ever. The battling brothers sold out Madison Square Garden in 30 minutes, made a new album that's been hailed a return to form, and spawned a breed of bands that cite them as a key influence. To help promote Don't Believe the Truth Liam and guitarist Gem Archer told VH1 about the difference between fans in England and the U.S., and the longevity of the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll lifestyle. So Oasis has a brand new album. Why now? Liam: Mortgages to pay. Children, wives. Stuff like that. Not creative inspiration? Liam: Oh, no. None of that nonsense. We leave that for other bands. You were once said to exemplify the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll lifestyle. Are you growing out of it? Liam: Well, I'm having sex, but it's not with anyone else except my missus, y'know what I mean? And drugs? I don't kind of go out of me way to get high, it just sorta happens. Rock 'n' roll ... I'm still immensely into it and turned on by it and passionate about it. That'll never change. If you haven't had sex and drugs before you join a rock 'n' roll band, you're a bit weird, if you ask me. What do you think of Coldplay usurping you on the top of the UK charts? Liam: I don't think anything of it. It was inevitable wasn't it? They're on their third album, and it's all going great for them. We'll see where they are in 12 years. Y'know what I mean? That's what it's about, isn't it? What's it like to have bands like the Killers cite you as an influence? Liam: I don't ever listen to the Killers. I suppose it's nice that people say nice things about you instead of saying bad things. But I wish they'd pay a little bit more attention. What's the strangest place you guys have been recognized? Liam: The ladies toilets. Describe Oasis fans. Liam: Very lucky. No, they're weird if you ask me, just weird. Coming to see us, man? Pretty weird, but nice. They're weird but in a good weird way, not in a bad weird way, not like psycho killers. Gem: They're actually good looking fans. Liam: A bit of style. Do you see a difference between your American fans and British fans? Liam: After last night I totally do. English fans are f*cking mad as far as I'm concerned. We did a gig last night in Chicago. They were into it and all that, but there was no beer in the venue! Gem: It was a dry venue, which is just unthinkable in England. Liam: You couldn't drink, so it was just everyone stood there - but they were loving it. In England our gigs are like a football match. That's just the way it is. Y'know what I mean? They still enjoy it. Who came up with the concept for the "Lila" video? Gem: I didn't. I hate videos. They're rubbish. They turn my head in. Liam: It wasn't like we were gonna try and do that rock 'n' roll circus with lots of freaky stuff [going on]. I think the guy got carried away and went a bit out of bounds. The band's bits were good, but there were lots of people on stilts and weird shit going on which is not us. But the bits where we're on stage are actually alright. We don't mind the videos as long as it's us playing live. When they try to get you to do a bit of acting, it's all over for me. I can't be bothered. If I was a kid watching a band, I wouldn't want to see loads of stupid actors in them. I just want to see them play. Like The Who videos and the Beatles you just see them playing. There was none of them loads of extras in and stilts and funny hats. So Liam, how do you write a song? Liam: My bit just sort of happens. I'm winging it, y'know? It all just sort of happens, but then I get stuck. That's when Gem comes in and he'll help. I need a little bit of help every now and then. Is there any song by someone else that you wish you'd written? Liam: Loads of 'em. "Man of the World" by Fleetwood Mac. That's Peter Green Fleetwood Mac, before the ladies joined. I wish I'd wrote that. When was the last time you won a fight? Liam: Good question. I don't think I've won any. I always get my head kicked in. I haven't had any fights to tell you the truth. It's just been chaos. [Though] verbal ones I win all the time. What's next for you guys? What's your goal? Liam: The goal is to keep making records and every now and again flirt with genius and make something else amazing. Next time we go on a shoot, we'll try and make something really truly magical and amazing that will blow everyone's mind, as well as ours. We might get there and we might not. It might just be a good record, but that's the goal - make a f*cking wild record
