Q: Has there been any studies or research done to compare the dental health of vegetarians and non-vegetarians? A: Here is what our researcher has found for you: There are many theories about detal decay, and here are two of them. Weston Price was a dentist, travelling around the world, visiting people who were still living a natural life. He found them to have perfect teeth even though they'd never even seen a tooth brush from afar. Enter foods of civilization (white flour, sugar, cans...) and tooth decay becomes rampant even there. See http://www.westonaprice.org/price.htm Another theory is that the mercury-amalgam fillings used by dentists (HIGHLY toxic) kill the natural bacteria in your mouth that help to prevent tooth decay: the 'natural environment' of your teeth is destroyed by mercury. Have a look here: http://venus.nildram.co.uk/veganmc/teeth.htm I think it is impossible to say whether a vegan or vegetarian diet is better or worse than an omnivorous diet. There are many 'junk food' vegans (they consume lots of soft drinks, other sugary food, white flour and so on), and there are very healthy omnivores. There are vegans who brush their teeth, and vegans who do not! Obviously one has to be concerned about the minerals that are required by teeth, so eating enough calcium is important for example. But this is easy to obtain from most varied diets. Speaking from personal experience, I became a vegan at the age of 18, right after I had my first (tiny) filling at the dentist. Since becoming vegan 16 years ago, I have had no more fillings - in fact, I only go to the dentist every 4 or 5 years and he doesn't even have to clean my teeth! Perhaps other vegans reading this discussion would like to comment on how they thing a vegan diet has affected their teeth...?
