Natalie Imbruglia waited a long time to launch her singing career after leaving TV show ‘Neighbours’ - because she didn't want to be seen as another Kylie Minogue. The Australian babe left the long-running soap opera in 1994 but was eventually forced to release her debut single TORN in 1998, because her British Visa was about to expire unless she justified her existence in the country. Natalie explains, "I really wanted to be an actress in the UK but I couldn't get a work permit. I was so scared to go back to singing because I'd been established as an actress and at the time, there'd been a lot of grief for people who were going from Neighbours into a singing career. I was so scared of that negative slant so I put it off until I ran out of money. I mean, I couldn't work as an actress - I didn't want to go home to Australia and I didn't know what else to do. I was going to get kicked out of the country and eventually I thought, 'You know what, I can sing, I should just be doing something like this'. So I did it when I was backed into a corner and it worked. I think I was just terrified of people not accepting me as a singer." Now, Natalie is working on her third album is also modeling for cosmetics giant L’Oreal. In her pop videos, Natalie admits she feels anxious the promo will be a disappointment, but for the L'Oreal campaigns, she feels free of responsibility. The engaged girl says, "The L'Oreal thing doesn't get in the way (of acting or singing). It's so much fun because it doesn't roll around very often. It's not too many days in the year and so it's actually quite fun when they ring up and say, 'You've got to do a L'Oreal shoot in Paris for three days.' That's kind of glamorous and I really enjoy it. It's harder work than you'd think but there's no pressure. Although they're under pressure because they've got the product and it has to be right, there's a freedom in that it's not my own video shoot. You don't have to be so stressed out about it." (wenn)
