I just saw Eva la Yerbabuena...
Perform last night, and what can I say? It was good, but I expected more.... The performance was quite short, 80 minutes, and it was fairly obvious that they did not do a rehersal before - there was no lighting AT ALL (and not because there's no option for it in that theater), and also the company members "messed up" there formations on stage quite often. Normally this wouldn't bother me so much, but when you have 3 dancers standing one behind the other, and two are bending to the side to create a "fan formation" and the third one is not in the center... it doesn't look good...
The company is very good, very good dancers; of the women, I'd have to say La Choni (Asuncion Perez) was the best one, she really shined in an Alegrias that the 3 women danced (without Eva) with bata de cola and abanico. I have never seen La Choni so flirty and feminine before
Of the male dancers, well, they did a bulerias number which was very nice; one of the male dancers, a guy with long hair, you could tell he studied quite a lot of time with the Farrucos, or at least he's a big fan, because he was trying very hard to imitate Farruquito's style of dance, but lacking farruquito's elegance. And then there was Eva.... What can I say? Eva is amazing, she truely is unique, noone dances quite like her, but I got the feeling that she is becoming somewhat of a slave to her "shticks" - she knows that the audience expects certain things, and she gives it to them... But what about variety??? She danced a sygirias which I thought was very good (although the jacket she wore made it look like she has no neck), and an alegrias which I liked less (too much footwork; even though her footwork is very precise and musical) And then there were the singers... This is probably the thing that bothered me the most throughout the performance. The singers sat there, looking like they were totally pissed off with Eva - no palmas, they sang very "weakly", without any heart and soul... I was very disappointed with the singing, I expected more from Enrique Soto and his two fellow cantaors... Finally, there was no encore
And the audience applauded, but then again, for most of them this was truely amazing. But for me, and the two japanese dancers sitting next to me (which were in Sevilla for a long time), were expecting more...
