i have 2 definitions to what a "word" is A word is any meaningful sequence of sounds that can't be decomposed into smaller meaningful parts. + A word is any sequence of sounds that refers to an object, property or action. here is the assignment : "find examples which satisfy these criteria and yet aren't intuitively "words thanks!

questions:

If a word is a written word, is it a sequence of sounds?
You can imagine a person who communicates only by writing and reading, and has no concept of the word being a "sequence of sound". Examples: - a person deaf from birth, who does not know what "sound" actually means to you and me. - a computer, telling you "Error" or "you have a message", but has no idea what sounds these words represent (or that there is anything relating those words to sounds). - a normal person who for some reason has never learnt the relation between sounds and writing in a particular language (there's an example in the original "Taarzan" book). - sign language. Examples for sounds satisfying these criteria you wanted: - school bell: it is a meaningful sequence of sounds (a particular tune or chime, etc) which refers to an action ("come to class, recess over") but is not a word. - any whistle sign. These are used on ships, backstage in theatres, and many other places. There're lots more. Think along these lines and see what you come up with.
