Good morning to you all../images/Emo42.gif

As far as I can remember there are nine verbs in English which are defined as "irregular" in the Present Progressive tense. (I'm talking about the CVC rule). The verbs I can remember are: open, visit, shower, cover, discover, listen, remember Do you remember two more vebs? Thank you in advance

I know the rule

but my students have a hard time getting the whole MILEL-MILRA thing, so I decided to find the list and save them the trouble...

Why save them the trouble?

Use clapping, use music, be creative, but odn't give up We don't want our students to act like robots, do we? makethem to understand the rules and then they will be able to use them

,You know

In this case, I don't think knowing the rule is too necessary. Firstly, because of the ridiculously small number of verbs that have this irregularity, and secondly, because I'm not sure how many native speakers are actually aware of WHY they spell "showering" or "happening" without doubling the last consonant. People just do it out of acceptance that it's like that with these specific verbs. So I actually think memorizing the list is going to be more helpful. But that's just me.

Oh ok

I personally believe that a second lanugage acquisition process should be made as similar as possible to the natural way in which one has acquired his or her native lanugage. I think the method in which students today learn their English at school (if, indeed, they manage to learn anything) is robotic and useless. If anything it improves their ability to spit out the rules by heart. It doesn't improve their English skills.
