Vocabulary

Vocabulary is extremely important. Everyone should strive to know as many words as possible. The more words you know, the more possibilities you have to express yourself. If you keep a limited vocabulary, you'll be never able to reach the depths or heights of the language and experience the many things it can do for you. Language often depicts reality; words do not appear out of thin air, they are formed because there's a need for them. The degradation and degeneration of people's vocabulary doesn't boast well for them at all. It narrows down the realms they can walk in and the doors they can open.

In my opinion, it's a lot more important

to know how to write complicated ideas and thoughts in a clear and logic way than to know ten different words to describe an object (words that nobody uses nowadays by the way...) If I'm talking about Hebrew for a moment which is my first language I've noticed over the years that a lot of people just can't write In way that people could understand what they want (and I'm talking about educated people here ) That's why manuals are sometimes almost impossible to understand (even if the Hebrew is "perfect") ) There's no need to know the meanings of all the Hebrew words in the bible and not even in Bialik poems (about 100 years ago ) simply because nobody talks like that today It'll be a complete waste of time and energy (which one could use instead to learn how to write in a clear way ) language is something that has its own life It evolves over the years and created by the people If you use an oldie nobody's gonna understand you correctly In English there's a lot of written literature from the last 400 years and it has become like a national sport to certain native speakers (mostly writers ) to learn as many words as you can and brag about it to your friend afterwards (like this is really going to tell how smart you are ...) It's useless IMO As I said before It's a lot more useful to learn How to write complicated ideas in a simple, clear and logic way than to try to makes simple things complicated by using words that nobody uses anymore

Vocabulary

Perhaps you don't know, but vocabulary is a huge part of being able to express complex ideas in a simple and clear language. We're not talking about describing an object, language is like a kaleidoscope— it gives you the opportunity to see the multitude of life breaking in endless colors. Using the right words in the right context is very often more important than grammar. You say that nobody uses "these" words anymore, really? I must be nobody since I use them. My friends and colleges must be nobodies too, since they use them as well. My professors are surely nobodies since they constantly use them. What does this proves? Nothing. Who exactly is the counterpart of nobody? If you haven't heard of these old, worn out, out of date, archaic words, it doesn't mean "nobody" uses them. I know that when I hear or see a word I don't know, I rush to my dictionary and look it up. You see someone with a broad vocabulary as someone who is bragging— that's odd, why? Indeed, language is a living entity which changes all the time. Yet, as every entity, it has a bearing, a history and roots. You want to limit yourself? Go ahead, fine by me. I want to know as many words as possible, I don't care how "old" they are and how frequently they are being used, I love them either way and don't play favors. I want the full ride, the complete tour. I want to touch every morpheme and hear every phoneme. I want a thousand words for fantastic, you want to settle, be my guest.

To each his own

IMO your language can't be simple and clear when you use your own special lingo You need to communicate with people with the same language they talk to you, otherwise nobody's going to take the time to read or hear what you have to say College is a nice and green place but the real word is a totally different game ... But never mind, we don't have to agree on this As I said... to each is own

OK

A broad vocabulary is not a "special lingo"... I don't go to college, I go to a univesity; and it's more gray than green. The real world, funny. To each their own.
