Elizabeth Must Stay
Elizabeth is a lesbian from Uganda who fled to the UK in 2004 after suffering torture and rape while in state detention because of her sexuality. Her claim for asylum has been rejected because UK immigration officials, who recognise that it is not safe to be homosexual in Uganda, do not think that the same is true for lesbians. In addition, they believe that because Elizabeth had a child as a young woman, she cannot be a "real lesbian". Elizabeth has been living in Manchester, where she has been supported by friends. Her experiences have taken a terrible toll on her physical and mental health; she's in very poor shape. She is now being held at Yarl's Wood Detention Centre, prior to deportation - the date set is 2nd June. The situation is urgent. Please spare a couple of seconds to go to the web site Elizabeth Must Stay, read Elizabeth's story and sign the petition. You can also learn more about the lives of Ugandan lesbians and gay men.
