not JD but LLM

most israelis in the states that go to law school goes to the LLM program which is a master in law, which also means you need to have a bachelor in law - LLB most istraeli come to the states after they studied law in israel and graduated from their LLB you dont have to do it this way, there is no reason why you shouldn't do a JD but it's a much longer way if your end point is wanting to work in the US. in order to have a JD you must go to college first which takes 4 years and only than you can pursue your JD that is considered graduate studies so it's 3 more years - so the total is 7 where if you did it the israeli way you would go strate to law school in israel for 3.5-4 years and than apply for an LLM in the states which graduate studies as well but takes only 1 year so your total will be 4.5-5 but you can do a JD if you want. agaian, i am not familiar with israeli who have done that unless they are israelies living in the US since they were kids good luck

JD

LLM

Oded (with the 111) LLm does take only a year in the US - it's a short but not an easy program and i personally had the best time ever. LLB from israel is good no matter where you did it but you should take into consideration that some universities probablly know and think of the universities in israel better than colleges i had my LLB from IDC (reichman) and had no problem getting into a top 10 university and i know of others from your college too so i dont think it will be a problem all you need are good grades, good recomendations and a really good PS. btw- 2 years is usually an MBA program

yes and no

you can only apply and take the NY and California bars btw- you can take them with out having a US LLM - i mean - you can with only an israeli LLB

true, but

i wouldn't advocate this. keep in mind that once you were admitted to the bar in NY or CA, you'll compete with Ivy League JD alumni on a position in law firm. No JD, let alone no LLM, wouldn't help you get into a prestigious law firm or become partners later on (partially due to the popular obsession with school repitation here, but primarily becuase of the derivatives of not having your degree from a US school, such as your oral communication in English etc.)

well yes and no again

you dont compete with ivy league specificaly but with american JDs in general w/out ant difference from what school they are as you are a foreign but it is an option if someone really wants to work here and doesnt have the money for an LLM which can get up to $60,000 for school and leaving expenses (and out of NYC)

u didn't understand...

he'll compete with many people, ivy league grads, and non-ivy grads. what i was trying to stress was that the market was very competitive and people with JD's, especially from prestigious law schools, usually make better candidates so if he wants to improve his chances of getting a well paying job, he should at least pursue an LLM or better yet a JD regarding the money issue-- with an average initial pay of 165k anually in NY's big law firms, the couple grands you pay for school can be payed off in a few months aqfter graduation. That said, if you can't come up with this amount, or can't take out a loan, or not sure if you can find a job when you graduate, and you think you can prepare for the bar exam by yourself, so yeah go ahead and take the bar exam w/o a local law degree
