Canon 10D - Err 99

I am at the moment in the Netherlands (Using my friend's comp, therefor cannot type in Hebrew) Lately I have faced too frequently the 10D Err 99 problem, which locks the camera. I switch it off and on again, to solve the problem, but it continues to happen more and more. I read it may be related to non Canon lenses, but I only use Canon lenses... Is anyone using the 10D faced the same problem? maybe there is a firmware update? Many thanks! Shlomo

Unfortunatly i still don't own a 10D but i suggest you also search the DPReview relevant forum hope you solve the situation and get back to us with nice photos

bad contacts ?

they were also referring to bad contacts betwin the lense and body and suggested to check if they are clean

Hi !

Dear Shlomo ! I am very distressed that the dreaded error 99 came visiting your 10D. There are many possible problems that cause this error. 1) Clean the contacts of the 10D with the lenses with alcohol 2) Try to use a different new battery 3) Someone had luck with a new CF card. The problem has a lot of causes, hope you solve it. Does it happen with all lenses or just one ? Thomas P.S Enjoy your stay in Netherlands, bring some nice photos !

Thanks for your prompt answers I cleaned the contacts, and it seems better it happened in various lens types - all Canon I still wonder if Canon cannot fix such a problem in their firmware because the problem is indeed very frustrating Many thanks and Bye Shlomo

It cannon be fixed

in firmware, since ERROR 99 is HARDWARE error! It is not a problem in software but problem with the hardware, so no firmware will ever fix it. When you come home and the problem persist I suggest a swift ride to Carat to service the 10D. Thomas

Lenses have firmware too….

I don’t really know canons err system but did you tried to reset the camera? Isn’t there a reset button somewhere?

There is a reset

It's in the menu and you have two options there. But then you have to go and change all your parameters the way you like them. About the firmware on the lens, I doubt he has ANY problem with his lenses since the problem happens with different lenses and his lenses are all top notch lenses from Canon which never needed a firmware update I am aware of. Indeed when I come back in Israel I'll have the camera checked at Karat. From Dpreview I learn that this Err 99 happenes to many others - Thomas - indeed as you say maybe there is a hardware mulfunction but still I guess that the firmware checks it and it is the firmware that delivers the message, I also heard it is somehow connected with the camera reading the lens parameters in order to write them to the exif and perhaps if the lens contacts are not 100% OK - it cannot read all the information, thus leading to this error- then in such a case - who cares for all the 100% info of the exif? what more important is to have it as a WARNING, and not as FATAL error that completely blocks the camera so I guess it is still a matter of the software to decide what to do in such a case... there is more to it

Tomas and shromeo, there is a lot more to it than just the EXIF. First, the camera is downloading lens parameters regarding the actual maximum contrast that the lens is capable of. This info is used in the focusing so that the focus sensor would not have to jump back and forward to achieve maximum focus. Second, the lens is due to report distance after focusing so that the matrix metering could work. This is the way it's done on a Nikon system, I am quite sure that canon has something similar. Since so many people have had this problem, my guess would be a firmware related issue since the firmware is responsible for the communication between him self and the lens software. But, it could also be the weather (in a strange risible kind of way). Hope "karat" will have an answer for you.
