Partenr Visa

My partner and I have gone through this process about 3 years ago. It's pretty simple but there are a few very important things - you HAVE to have lived together for AT LEAST 12 months like a married couple (eg same address, joined bill, joined bank account etc). And they're very anal about the 12 months. Other than that... just read through the application - whatever they ask for, add a couple more - they ask for at least 2 stat dacs - we gave them 8 (that's a really important one). They ask for 2 or 5 photos (can't remember anymore...) - we gave the a few pages with us with different friends, on holidays, with family etc. The most important thing is that you just do what they ask you and then a bit more - so they will have NO reason whatsoever to say no to you. The guy at the embassy is harsh and nice at the same time - if he suspects that you're not genuine he'll give you shit (as I heard from many others), but if you gave him a 5cm thick folder with AT LEAST a years of living together (we gave him almost 2 years) - he's really nice. Oh, and I don't know if you're stressed in time - but if you are you can apply for the police check when you apply for the visa - it takes about a month anyways. And I undertook the med examination in Melbourne before going to Israel to apply - so when I applied I just chucked in the folder with my results - but I don't know if in Israel you can get checked without being referred to the doc from the embassy. Hope it helped. If you have any questions just let me know. And thanks for Noile that told me to get my arse here... too many exams.... not enough time...

I get myself into trouble easily../images/Emo13.gif

When I talk to my folks in Hebrew I sometimes translate idioms from Aussie English into Hebrew and it certainly didn't work well when I ask my dear mum in Hebrew if they're very anal in Israeli universities about essay format. She laughed for yonks and the next day told everyone at the library (yeah, she's a librarian...) how in Australia the lecturers are anal and then they all called each other anal for a few weeks. Same with saying the something is hard-core... just doesn't work the same way in Hebrew
Who said Australian English isn't sexy?

hey hey hey... this is not AUSSIE!!

HERE in CANADA we also refer to someone as being anal and we also say that someone is hard core... this is not an australian expression!!!! and p.s. I had the same experience when i told to my friend in hebrew that someone was so anal... needless to say how he understood it... especially when he's gay!!! :)

Origins of anal

Fedex will probably think this is about something else...
It actually comes from Freud's psychoanalysis and is as old as the hills (almost). It is widely used, cross culturally and cross linguistically - it has become part of general (Western) culture and is (or should be) universally understood. I'm surprised to learn that it is so unknown in Israel, especially since so much of psychotherapy there has yet to evolve from the dark ages of psychoanalysis. So you could say it is Austrian in origin. The full expression is "anal retentive" (which is what I am for explaining it in such detail!), and is to do with one of the biggest loads of bullshit ever invented (where people's characters/behaviours are divided according to the phase of childhood development in which they were "blocked" - let's leave it at that because it's too daft for words).

anal is not

so much incorporated into the language in hebrew as it is in english, i can't recall anyone using it is hebrew / israel. also, not living in any other english speaking country i also don't always know which part of the language is english and which part of it is aussie, although the aussies know and love to talk about it. another unrelated issue, well maybe it is related to anal retentive, is the obsession here with spelling. i mean, there are spelling competitions, the kids have spelling tests in shcool even in the higher grades, endless spelling games etc. is it an aussie thing? an english thing? or everywhere but israel thing?

It's an everywhere but Israel thing

Spelling bees are very popular in the US and increasingly popular in the UK too. In Holland they have national (and "international" - i.e. with Belgium...) spelling tests and they have a very high profile. Spelling and language are of an area of both pride and interest in countries other than Israel. It is recognised that your use of language reflects your intellect, culture and soul. I personally haven't come across the Israeli equivalent of educated people speaking their own language very badly (and not even being ashamed of it) anywhere else. Bad grammar is like a badge of honour there... When I go there (despite the fact that my Hebrew has deteriorated significantly over the years) people laugh at me for speaking correct Hebrew. The contrast with other countries is huge.
