standards
what we call standards today is actually pop songs from the 20s and the 30s. these were addopted (recorded and performed live) by the leading jazz figures in the 40s 50s 60s.. thats how we know these tunes to be - jazz (if i should loose you, some day my prince will come, autumn leaves..) also, many show tunes (from brodway musicals) were played in the same manner by the various jazz masters .. thats how we know "my favorite things" "my funny valentine"..
