Thornwaldt's cysts are congenital defects that occur in the nasopharynx (the back of the nose where the adenoid tissue is). These cysts have nothing to do with the adenoids. They occur in about 3 percent of the population, with equal occurrence in males and females. The most common symptoms are postnasal discharge, dull headaches, halitosis and an abnormal taste in the back of the mouth. None of these symptoms are diagnostic or unique to this cyst. Examination of the nasopharynx of a patient with Thornwaldt's cyst shows a midline cyst of 1 to 2 centimeters in size, usually just above the adenoid tissue. These cysts sometimes can be confused with cysts in the adenoids, but most of these adenoid cysts are located away from the midline. CT or MRI scans of the nasopharynx show the cysts in excellent detail. Treatment of Thornwaldt's cysts involves either removal of most of the capsule (marsupialization) to allow for continuous drainage. No long-term degenerative problems occur from these cysts
