The Bush administration needs to directly buy stock index futures with government money to stabilize the market. And it needs to take that action so quietly that none of us know about it. And Washington could also talk up the idea of letting Social Security funds be invested in stocks. This is a horrible idea. Allowing it to happen would be a disaster. But talking about allowing it to happen could give stocks some strength.
