Jeff and myself didn't want to bother you after the show due to your urge flight to Swisserland, that is the reason that we didn't continue among our interview with you and the band. A lot of Israeli fans are expecting forward to your show in Israel in October. I sit here with my friend Aharon Mikel, he's 23 years old and is a great fan of Hard rock and the band. "Demons and Wizards" is one of his beloved albums, which also influenced him in his writing, he's a poet. we would like to make an interview with you as a part of the promotion to the band shows in Israel, due to the fact, that many young&new(most of them wasn't even born when the band was started
Israeli fans, would like to know more about the band. We would start a few questions about the classic line-up of the band in the early 70' and remove afterward to the actual line-up. 1. Where did you meet at first the late David Byron and how did your relationship with him got develop? . HE USED TO COME ON STAGE AND SING A FEW NUMBERS EACH NIGHT AT OUR SHOWS AS THE STALKERS. HE THEN CAME FOR AN AUDITION AND GOT THE JOB AND WE BECAME FIRM FRIENDS. 2. We know that while recording "Very 'eavy..", Deep Purple was practising near by in "De la-Lane", and we know that were mutual influences between both of the bands. Can you mention more bands in that time,which influenced UH musically? . AN AMERICAN BAND CALLED VANILLA FUDGE WHERE INSPIRATIONAL 3. In 1971, prior your first show in the US, had published big article in the Rolling Stones magazine by Melissa M. which it's article was: "If they have success, I'm committing suicide". How did this expression affect your motivation as a band to perform in the US? SHE ALSO CALLED US A THIRD RATE JETHRO TULL IN THE SAME ARTICLE SO IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT SHE WAS TALKING OUT OF HER BACKSIDE AND HAD VERY LITTLE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MUSIC SCENE. 4. In that age of the early 70's, the Progressive Rock was a steaming fireball, did the band see itself as concluded to the genre of Prog. Rock or heavy metal, and did you see "Demons&Wizard" and "The magician birthday" as albums which are referred to the Prog. Rock genre, especially because of the fact that the artist Roger Dean made the both album covers(as he's known as great Prog. Rock albums covers painter), and do you see those albums as concept ones? . THEY WERE NOT ACTUALLY CONCEPTUAL BUT IT JUST HAPPENED THAT THERE WAS A THEME THAT WENT THROUGH THE MUSIC AND THE ARTWORK IN THE END RESULT. 5. What in your opinion influenced much worse in UH, the departure from Gary Thain and his death, or firing David Byron from the band, as he was known as the front man in the band and its commercial symbol? THESE WERE VERY SAD TIMES. TO LOSE BOTH OF THEM WAS A DISASTER ON BOTH A PERSONAL LEVEL AND A BUISINESS ONE. THE INSPIRATION TO KEEP THE BAND GOING WAS TO KEEP THE MUSIC THAT THEY BOTH CONTRIBUTED VERY MUCH ALIVE. 6. Did you personally was whole with both of the drastic decisions? . THEY WERE DECISIONS THAT WERE MADE AT THE TIME CONSIDERING ALL THE CIRCUMSTANCES AT THE TIME. THEY WERE DEPERATE DECISIONS MADE OUT OF DESPERATE CIURCUMSTANCES. IT IS SUCH A SHAME THAT ALONG THE WAY OUTSIDE INFLUENCES DILUTE THE FRIENDSHIP AND STRENGTH THAT THE BAND HAD IN THE BEGINNING. PEOPLE LOSE THEIR WAY RATHER THAN CONSOLIDATING AND WORKING TO THEIR STRENGTHS. 7. In 1984 and in the year 2001 you visited Israel. What is most remembered to you from those visits? GREAT TIMES. LOTS OF FUN AND MOST ENJOYABLE. 8.The current Line-up is the most stable one of the band from its starting. In our opinion, it's the best line-up of the band since the classic line-up in the 70's. Can you tell us please a bit about your relationship with the band members? WE HAVE THE SAME CHEMISTRY THAT THE SO CALLED CLASSIC LINEUP HAD. THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT WE ARE ALL VERY GOOD FRIENDS AND WE ARE FOCUSED ON A COMMON GOAL AND WILL NOT LET ANYONE LET US STRAY FROM IT. 9. Your last studio album: "Sonic Origami" is knows by many as one the best albums of the band ever and is concerned by its quality to the classic albums of the band. what do you think about this aspect and are you whole with it? WE DID THE BEST JOB WE COULD AT THE TIME AND IT HAS PROVED TO BE A SUCCESS. 10.In the last show of yours which I've seen in Holland, most of the songs played were from the classic period of the early 70's. I must say, that the band performed in admirable way. don't you think that's it about time that the current line-up would stand by its own and would play more originally written songs by it? THE TIME FOR THIS WILL BE WITH A NEW ALBUM OUT AND THE SET WILL CHANGE QUITE A BIT. RIGHT NOW WE ARE HAVING FUN WITH IT AND OF COURSE WE HAVE A GOOD LEGACY OF SONGS FROM 4 DECADES TO CHOOSE FROM. 11. Is the band about to record a new album soon, and if it's about to happen , who are the group members who are going to write mostly in it? WE WILL RECORD A NEW CD BUT WE ARE SORTING OUT SOME OF THE BUSINESS PROBLEMS THAT GO ALONG WITH IT. I HOPE THAT WE ALL HAVE A HAND IN THE WRITING BUT I GUESS MYSELF PHIL AND TREVOR WILL BE THE NUCLEUS. 12. Part of your shows are with Deep Purple. Can you tell us a bit about those shows, and with which bands did you liked to perform together the most? ONE OF THE BEST TOURS WE DID WITH ANOTHER BAND WAS DEF LEPPPARD. THE PURPLE SHOW SHOULD BE FUN AND CERTAINLY A GOOD NIGHT FOR ROCK N’ ROLL. 13 What are the bands that you most like to hear those days and did you hear about the Prog. Rock band: Dream Theater YES I HAVE ALL THEIR CD’S. THERE ARE NOT MANY BANDS AROUND THAT APPEAL TO ME I USUALLY STICK ON MY CD PLAYER A LOT OF OLD STUFF FROM THE 70’S.
