Despised and Rejected was published in May of 1918, had respectable reviews, and sold over 800 copies over the summer. In September of the same year the remaining 200 copies were seized and destroyed and the publisher taken to court, not for the novels homosexual content, for it's pacifism and anti war stance. The book was reported to ‘likely to prejudice the recruiting, training, and discipline of persons in his Majesty’s forces.’ The judge, Sir Charles Wakefield, said that the question of whether the book was obscene was not before him, but he described it as ‘morally unhealthy and most @mrmousetolliver / mrmousetolliver.tumblr.compernicious’.

הספר דווח ככזה ש"עשוי לפגוע בגיוס, בהכשרה ובמשמעת של אנשי כוחות הוד מלכותו". השופט, סר צ'ארלס וייקפילד, ציין כי שאלת היות הספר מגונה לא הובאה בפניו, אך תיאר אותו כ"בלתי מוסרי מבחינה בריאותית ומזיק ביותר".
