Lucy is asked by a developmentally challenged friend, Paul (guest star Gordon Billinger), to convince his parents to let him join a traveling troupe of puppeteers, "The Famous People Players". Meanwhile, Eric is feeling low because he is stuck at home recovering from surgery and really wants to get back to work despite doctor's restrictions, so Annie asks the kids to help make him feel needed by going to him with their problems. Ruthie takes this suggestion to heart and secretly tells Eric how he should be helping everyone with their romantic entanglements. His meddling leads to chaos for everyone involved. Lastly, Kevin learns that Ben is planning to extend his temporary stay in Glenoak.
Annie asks the kids to help make Eric feel more useful while he is at home recovering from surgery. At breakfast, Ruthie tells everyone that she knows they have problems and it would be good for them to talk to Eric about the problems. All the kids deny having problems, so Ruthie runs down the list of what each person is having a problem with currently: Simon wants to see Cecilia, Robbie wants to see Roxanne (Roxy), Lucy is still jealous of Roxy, Kevin wants Ben to leave, and Ben doesn't want to leave Glenoak. Upstairs Eric gets off the phone with Lou, the church director. He starts to take off his clothes. Annie finds him and asks why he is undressing. He explains to her that Sarah's father is doing so well filling in at church that he isn't needed there. Annie reminds him that he is supposed to be taking life easy and recuperate from the surgery. Ruthie finds Eric on the bed and tells him that both Simon and Robbie are having girl troubles and that Kevin and Ben are fighting. She tells Eric that he would be very helpful if he looked into the problems for everyone. Robbie asks Kevin's help with asking Roxy out on a date. Kevin declines saying that he doesn't want to get involved in his partner's personal life. Robbie claims that he hasn't called Roxy since their make-out session because he knew that Lucy probably would be happy. Kevin says that it isn't about what will make Lucy happy, but what will make Robbie happy. Robbie asks Lucy's advice on asking Roxy out. She doesn't give him any advice, but he finds out that she still isn't crazy that Roxy and Kevin are partners. In his apartment Kevin asks Ben why he is staying in Glenoak. Ben claims that he misses Kevin and sharing a room with him. Kevin doesn't buy Ben's claim and kicks him out of his apartment assuming that he will have to return to Buffalo. Later Ben informs Kevin that Eric said he could stay in the house. Kevin is upset and goes to confront Rev. Camden. Eric invites Cecilia over for Simon's benefit. Simon is furious that Eric interfered with Cecilia. Simon likes Cecilia, but she is dating a football jock that is a real jerk. Cecilia tells Simon that she cares about him and wants to be friends. When she finally leaves, Eric hears from Simon at how displeased Simon is with the situation. After confronting Eric, Kevin tells Ben that he talked with their mother and learned that she walked in on Ben and his girlfriend in a compromising position. Ben admits that he is embarrassed to go home. Kevin tells Ben that he needs to face the music and that he booked him on a red eye flight that night. Kevin decides to help Robbie and calls Roxy. Roxy mistakenly thinks Kevin is going to ask her out. She is upset when she learns that Kevin is only calling her because he thinks Robbie won't call her because of Lucy. Roxy calls Lucy and confronts her with the information. She tells Lucy that she better mind her own business otherwise Roxy will get into Lucy's business and that wouldn't be good. Lucy tells Robbie to call Roxy and leave her out of everything. Robbie finally calls Roxy, but she hangs up on him. While at the promenade, Lucy bumps into a friend, Paul. He is a mentally challenged adult that Lucy knows from Pete's. Paul asks for Lucy's help in convincing his brother and sister-in-law into letting him join a performing art group, The Famous People Players. At first Paul's relatives don't believe that Paul is capable of doing something so complicated. Lucy won't give up and after showing them a tape of Paul performing, they relent and let him join. Paul thanks Lucy for believing in him when no one else did. Since Ruthie's ploy to have Eric help everyone backfired, she decides to make up a story about a classmate who is abused by her parents. Eric believes that the story is true and tells Kevin. Kevin asks Roxy to look into the situation. After finding out the story isn't true, Roxy brings the family to the Camden's house to find out why Ruthie lied. After admitting she lied, Ruthie explained to Eric why she lied. While at the house, Roxy confronts Robbie and tells him that if he wants to ask her out he needs to be a man about it and not have others act on his behalf. She only wants to date a man, when he decides he can be that man he should call her. She leaves him after a hot kiss.
Ruthie to Simon: "Your problem is Cecilia. You like her but you're too chicken to ask her out." Ruthie to Robbie: "Your problem is Roxanne. You like her, but like Simon you're too chicken to ask her out." Ruthie to Lucy: "And your problem is Roxanne too. You don't like her being Kevin's partner, and I'm guessing you don't want to see her become Robbie's new girlfriend." Ruthie to Kevin: "Your problem is that Ben isn't leaving today like he said he was." Ruthie to Ben: "And your problem is that Kevin now knows that your not leaving today like you said you were." Ruthie to Kevin, Lucy, Ben, Robbie & Simon: "Don't be stingy. Go to dad with your problems. Make him feel needed." Kevin to Ben: "I'm not coming home any time soon. I going to marry Lucy." Ben to Kevin: "Can't I just want to stay because I miss having my big brother around."
