I am the offical name specialist here. I've done research on the name Tristan. It's from the Celtic name Drystan. Which is derieved from probably drest, meaning "riot" or "tumult". The name is sometimes associated with the Latin tristus, meaning sad. After Drystan, it became Tristram. The actual name's origin is closer to the Celtic legend of Tristram and Isoud, later renamed- Tristan and Isolde. Tristan de Lyones was a difficult birth, in which his mother died. He was to be named Mark after his uncle, the King of Cornwall. But his mother went through so much sorrrow that she named him Tristan before she died. I could go into the rest of the legend, but it really has nothing to do with his name.
