The song gives me a dark mellow atmosphere and the words create a dark story in my head. I find it a real engima and will be glad to hear your opinions about it so feel free to tel, me what you think. And please be kind as I try to unfold this mystery... I think the sun symbolizes success and stardom and it reminds me, like in ´Nothingman´ od the tale of "Icarus and Dedalus", where the son is warned not to fly to high and too close to the sun beacuse he will burn out and die. I think it´s the same idea here, there´s a trap in the sun. The ´truant´ seems to be the ´hero´ of this song. It says that truant is ´one who is abscent, evader´ and I´m trying to figure out who is this truant, where is he abscent from... [?] "immortality..." Some people, and I think Eddie is one of them, wish to leave a mark on the world befoe they leave it, a mark which will give them immortality. I´m not sure if this is realted, but it might be,, [?] "As privileged as a whore... victims in demand for public show Swept out through the cracks beneath the door " This sounds like Eddie talking about the pressure of the masses to preform and create by demand. "Holier than thou, how?" What makes one person holier than another? What makes famous people be more important than regular people? "Surrendered...executed anyhow" The ´holier´ are ´surrendered´ and then ´executed´- by the masess? Maybe this refers to the media exposing private things in front of the masses and by that excuting the soul of the artists who surrender to them. "Scrawl dissolved, cigar box on the floor..." Anyone can guess what the ´scrawl´ may mean? Maybe a contract? Seems like reference to Kurt´s death to me. "I cannot stop the thought...I´m running in the dark... Eddie tells us of his fear that one day he might have to sell out, and expose himself totally and lose all kind of privacy and intimacy he might still have. Have you got any ideas, I think I´ve done a bad job on this one... Really complicated... I feel I understand better than I can explain, but then again I might just not know what it´s about. " Some people can only be happy when they die, some people "cannot find the comfort in this world", Some people prefer the way of death rather than the way of total exposure and ultimate mass pressure, and when pushed to choose may end thier life. This has got a lot to do with the pressures Eddie has been through, which was strengthened when Kurt Cobain, who lead a very paralel life to Eddie´s, has comitted suicide. I´ve heard Eddie talk about it in an Interview, and the way I´ve understood it, no song was written about Kurt directly, rather Eddie was seeing the Kurt in him, and felt terribly identified. I was very worried when Vitalogy came out and when Kurt has died, Eddie was really on the edge then, and you can see it so strongly in Vitalogy in general and ´Immortality´ specifically.
