Nice touch, linking to the Daily Mail ../images/Emo6.gif

Love the Middle England scare mongering! For those of you who don't know, the Daily Mail is a reactionary, homophobic, racist rag read by those who love a good scare story with their breakfast. Main themes: we're all gonna die because of the evil gay asylum seekers who are out to kill our lovely way of life by forcing us to sell our children to the sex trade and then taking our jobs and homes and women. Or something like that. Look at the difference in reporting between the Mail and the (liberal) Guardian... The Guardian goes with the fact that faith schools can continue to preach against homosexuality.

Daily Mail

I got this much from Stephen Fry's comments on QI and probably other places. Of course all media channels provide the news tinted through their own colour filters. The trick is to know enough to identify the shade of each. Would you know of some reliable site that would give such concise characterisations of other newspapers?

The Mail is notorious

The most hated by any right thinking liberal. It is a disgusting rag, spewing prejudice and hatred in every direction. I don't know of any sites that give such information. Why the interest? Are you planning to move to the UK? Are you in the UK? These are things you will learn with time - learning them in a speeded up and pre-digested way doesn't make much sense and is no real substitute. You will slowly work all this out with time. Unless you remain in the ghetto of the mind of the Israeli/Golders Green brigade, who absolutely love the Daily Mail because part of its reactionary agenda is being rabidly pro-Israel and anti-Arab in a way that would seem out of place even in some Israeli papers... The more insular Jewish/Israeli community (as opposed to liberal and progressive - not in the religious sense! - Jews) love everything to do with the right in England, including (brrrrrrrrrrrr) the Tory party. Oh, did they love Maggie - may she burn in hell for ever and ever Amen - Thatcher.

Forewarned is forearmed

All media is coloured by perspective. I would like to know how those perspectives are typically characterised (preferably from a variety of points of view). There must be resources for that. We're in France now. More Anglophiles in Paris than Israelis abroad. But one doesn't need to be anywhere specific nowadays to be exposed to UK papers. Everything is online and everything is quoted and requoted by other channels. (Not to mention the only TV channels we have that speak English consistently are Sky News and CNN.) I form my own opinions, of course, some of it just by the size of Maddy's picture on today's front page.

I suddenly remembered...

...listening to the world news review at the end of the radio news in Israel, and how they quote 'the Sun'... If you didn't know any better, you could almost imagine from the serious tone of voice that they are talking about a real newspaper.

Precisely

And the more varied information on a source one has, the better one can evaluate. From your reactions, btw, one can deduce that the Daily Mail is still a cut above the Sun. I remember a time when Yediot and Maariv, even Ha'aretz, were not the rags they've become over the years. [I apologise for the right alignment. Tapuz refuses to accept my layout instructions.]

It's not just the size of the picture

The Guardian, for instance, calls her Madeleine, her real name... Calling her Maddy is a typical tabloid thing: giving everyone an unasked for nickname, to create the impression of a non-existent familiarity. This legitimises (in their eyes) the disgusting intrusion into people's ("celebrity" or not) private lives, a kind of global-village gossip over a garden fence contents of this kind of "press".

There are a variety of signals

graphic, lexical and other. Even the choice to run that as the front page story. I find that even the non-tabloids are sliding down that slope.
