The tradition started at the old Detroit Olympia in 1952 when the Red Wings swept the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Finals. The explanation, if any sense is to be made of this inhumane practice, was that it took eight victories in the old two-round Stanley Cup playoffs of the Original Six era to win the Cup. Octopuses have eight arms. Eight-eight, get it? No. Two octopuses were thrown on the ice after the first goal of the 7-0 rout of the Colorado Avalanche in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals. It took several minutes to clean the mess. The Red Wings were on a roll and the delay could have, but didn´t, throw off the home team´s momentum.
