TWELVE months ago Atomic Kitten's Liz McClarnon couldn't so much as pick up a bag without someone rushing to help her. She was one third of Britain's top female pop act, along with Jenny Frost and Natasha Hamilton, and was engaged to Blue star Lee Ryan. Now Liz is alone. Atomic Kitten have just completed their farewell tour and she split with Ryan in May last year after a difficult on-off relationship. It's a situation that the 23-year-old admits she is finding hard to come to terms with. "It's all change," Liz says. "There's no band and no boyfriend. I couldn't be happier. Or more scared... I go between the two." Liz is now forging ahead with a solo career as a singer and television presenter. This month she has landed a job presenting top European pop event Planet Live, and as soon as the cameras stop rolling she'll fly to Nashville to team up with some of the world's top songwriters and put the finishing touches to her solo album. "I've got so many choices to make now that it's scary," she says. "I've had five years' experience, and people think I have good business sense already but that's not the case. "I just want to write songs and sing and my manager can take care of the details. "Now that I am on my own I can't share the decisions with two other girls and I really do feel that weight on me. I find all that really stressful ... and very exciting." Atomic Kitten split amidst rumours of bitching and back-biting, but Liz says nothing could be further from the truth. "People used to think the Kittens squabbled all the time, but we didn't," Liz insists. "We'll be friends forever and we'll always see Tash's little boy, Joshua. "Jen and I will be the aunties who will let him do all the things his mum says not to." AT THE heart of much of the gossip was Jenny and Liz's supposed unhappiness about Natasha's regular absences because of poor health. But Liz paints a different picture. Natasha was diagnosed with clinical depression after Joshua's birth and has decided to take a year off to spend time with her son while her former bandmates pursue their solo careers. Liz says her own experience of depression three years ago - which she has kept secret until now - made her more than sympathetic to her bandmate's plight. "When Tash was going through a really bad time I knew exactly what she was feeling," she says. "When I was 20, 21, I went through misery. "It was depression and I kept fainting because I wasn't eating or sleeping properly. I'd go to bed and lie there feeling tired, but not being able to stop thinking about things. "I lost loads of weight too - I went down to eight and half stone which is really too low for my size. "I went through such a bad patch. On paper my life looked idyllic, but there were things that had huge effects on me." Tragically, it was the death of her stepbrother that spurred her recovery. "My stepbrother died in a car crash, and something gave me the inner strength to get through that," she says. "I had to be there for my dad and his family and even my mum wanted us all to stay together. I knew I had to carry on working - I couldn't stay home, but they were really worried about me going away. "I think it helped them go forward too when I said I couldn't stop, that I was working as normal. "It was part of going into shock. I could have stopped and said: 'Everything is too scary, I'm never going to get on a plane again. I'm not going to drink in case I fall over and bang my head and don't wake up. "We all thought like that for a while, and then my health came back." She was also helped by counselling and therapy. "I needed someone else to talk to," she says. "I'd love to be happy all the time, but I think everyone needs therapy. I know I benefited from it. You need to tell your problems to someone who doesn't judge you." Now her mum is studying psychology and Liz looks forward to going home for dinner - and counselling. On the man front Liz, who has dated a string of stars including Westlife's Kian Egan, has vowed never to get involved with a celebrity again. She came to the decision after suffering abuse from jealous Blue fans when she was dating Lee Ryan. "I was shouted at and called abusive names. Words I won't repeat," she says. "When I should have been at my happiest, I was often in tears. It's just too hard to stay together when you have people telling you you're disgusting." But pausing for thought she adds: "I'm very happy to be single for now."
