A lot of misperceptions surrounded the Elton John hit "Daniel." Many thought that the song was biographical, that it referred to co-writer/lyricist Bernie Taupin's brother. Taupin has said that the song deals with a totally fictional character. The original lyric for the song was much longer, detailing "Daniel"'s past as a war veteran. The deletion only added to the song's mythology.
