Hello Prof. Gyemant Here are few questions: 1. When did Jewish people in Romania start using surnames (the question refers mainly to "ordinary" families, not rabbinical)? 2. My great grandfather was called Mendel MENDELOVICI. He was called after his grandfather, Mendel MENDELOVICI. I can't tell for sure, but they may have been more Mendels in the family before. Following question number 1, can one tell approximately when did live "the Mendel" - the one that his son became the first one called MENDELEVICI (instead of "xxx, son of Mendel")? 3. My great great grandfather was called Gedalia DAMSKER. He was born around 1830 and left Ukraine (or somewhere else in the area) to Romania (Iasi) when he was youngster in order to avoid army. Since he was a tailor, and had a business (well known in the city) for women fashion, there is an assumption in my family that the surname DAMSKER came from is occupation and, based on the French word "Dame". Again, following question number 1 - is that assumption sounds reasonable, or is it more likely that he came to Romania with that surname? 4. The Jewish community of Iasi keeps burial registers archives, mainly of Jewish buried in the old cemetery PACURARI. I called the Jewish community but had only partial successes getting information from that archive. Do you know of any plans to digitize that information in order to make it accessible on the Web? Thanks, Oded
