Dear Prof.Baker al Majali , Salamat I am writing to you as a friend of the Naharaim Island of Peace project in the Jordan valley and it's director Mr.Ofer Lewin. I got your email address from Mr.Chen Melling Deputy Director of the of the Israeli Trains museum in Haifa. I understand you have been searching the topic of the Hejaz Train in Jordan and the Middle East. As you know, the Island of Piece is a joint touristic project Jordan Israel by which a piece of land surrounding the old Ruthenberg Hydro-Electric plant in the Jordan valley has been succeeded to Israel by Jordan as part of the peace agreement with Jordan. In that "island" Jordanian military post still exist-side by side with Jordanian and Israeli tourist activity surrounding the old and non functioning plant. As you know a branch of the Hejaz Railway was running in that "island" (Haifa-Deraa rail) and occasional trains were still passing there until about 1948. As part of the touristic activities in that "island", a train station has been partly reconstructed by Mr.Lewin's project. We'd like now to bring to the Naharaim Island an original – or close to an original engine such as the one that used to run on that track. And maybe some original cars. This will add a very important component to that peace project and really revive the way things used to look there. As I understand ............, the closest steam engines to the original ones that used to run on the track are those who were made in England by H&RS and the existing ones on the Jordanian trains are no.21 and 22. I also understand that no 23 is still functional but no 21 is not any longer and is somewhere in the Amman area. I also saw on the internet that one old engine and non functional engine is somewhere in Akaba desert region. Searching the internet it seems like some (or one?) original engines are to found in Syria and maybe Turkey. I would greatly appreciate getting any relevant information from you regarding the abovementioned. Our aim is reconstruction of the past for the benefit of both Jordan and Israel citizens in that part of the world. Sincerely yours Idak Said Prof.Shlomo Maayan Hadassah U. Hospital Jerusalem נתבקשתי ליידע אתכם אודות הדבר. תודה ושבת-שלום.
