Russian stock market dips Wednesday (Interfax News Agency Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)MOSCOW. May 3 (Interfax) - The Russian stock market dipped Wednesday amid a correction for most blue chips as speculators took profit as they closed short positions. Benchmark stocks fell 0.3%-3.8% on the Russian Trading System (RTS) and the Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange (MICEX). The RTS index grew 0.43% to 1,724.03, but the MICEX fell 0.48% to 1,531.1. Sberbank (RTS: SBER) led the fall, dropping 3.8% on the MICEX. Rostelecom (RTS: RTKM) fell 3.5%, Lukoil (RTS: LKOH) by 0.3%, Unified Energy System (UES) (RTS: EESR) by 1.5%, Surgutneftegas (RTS: SNGS) - 0.7% and Tatneft (RTS: TATN) - 0.9%. Norilsk Nickel (RTS: GMKN) looked better than the market and posted gains of 1.9% to 3,695.4 rubles a share on Western demand for its ADRs. Gazprom (RTS: GAZP) strengthened above 320 rubles and it grew 1% on both the St. Petersburg Stock Exchange and on the MICEX to 323.4 rubles and 0.3% to $11.84 on the RTS. Dealers said the market found support from high crude prices and good news, however a drop in the number of short speculative positions could give a signal to sell stocks. The market looked expensive even before the May holidays, but growing oil and metal prices strengthened the rising trend and now we are seeing new price levels, said Antanta Capital's Dmitry Peregudov. "Rising oil and metals are pulling up the Brazilian, Indian and Russian markets," he told Interfax. "Investors are favoring the assets of these countries. The market showed signs of volatility on Wednesday as those players take profit that had stocks over the May holidays. On the other hand, those who had cash before the holidays are now buying stocks back. I think the growth will continue over the week with short stops or a stop in price movement," he said. The market has shown strong growth over the past two days and the indices and a number of stocks have hit record highs, which has become a formal reason to take profit, said Nord Capital's Alexander Baranov. "The growth should not stop for very long and the general mood is upward," he said. "The market is waiting for a meeting of the Federal Reserve on May 10 and Russian President Vladimir Putin's annual address to the Federal Assembly on that same day. Investors want to hear a sane speech from Mr. Bernanke where he explains the 'pause in increasing rates', since the market is confused. The market has grown for the past three years before Putin's address," Baranov said. Alexander Zakharov of Uralsib (RTS: USBN) said the market is correcting slightly after oil prices stopped growing on Wednesday. "Oil grew in the U.S. on Tuesday and our market opened with an upward gap, but oil then stopped growing and prices began to stay inplace," he said. "Investors are mainly exaggerating the topic connected with a growth in U.S. interest rates. It's possible that after the rate is hiked on May 10 the stock market could make a small correction. The euro is also growing," he said. "The situation in Bolivia is lending support to commodities, after it began nationalizing its oil and gas sector and concern has arisen over interruptions in crude supplies," Zakharov said. "Furthermore, the situation around Iran has calmed down somewhat after the U.S. said it would not take any aggressive action against that country in the next 30 days. Trading on our market is concentrated in blue chips, the second-tier is practically standing in place, and investors are not building portfolios, but playing with money," he said. Baranov said that the closing of the shareholders' registers of Rostelecom on May 5, Sibneft (RTS: SIBN) on May 5, Lukoil on May 11, and Gazprom (RTS: GAZP) and UES on May 12 will not be very significant for market growth. "The topic of growing prices last year and now has greatly overtaken the topic of a growth in profit and, correspondingly, the size of company dividends. Therefore, the size of dividends is only of interest to big players who have large share packages, and all the other dividends aren't important," Baranov said. Among second-tier stocks, VSMPO-Avisma (RTS: VSMO) Corporation, the world's biggest milled titanium producer, posted gains of 1.4%, Dalsvyaz (RTS: ESPK) preferreds were up 2.1% and Transneft (RTS: TRNF) was up 1%, despite the fact that it reported a drop in net profit to Russian standards of 7.9% in 2005. It also reported that its net profit dropped more than twice in the first quarter. Novolipetsk Steel grew 2.7% to 64.7 rubles a share. UBS investment bank increased its rating to buy from hold and increased its forecast price by 6% to $2.6. Earlier, UBS increased its forecast price for Norilsk Nickel to $155 a share from $130 and confirmed its buyrecommendation. Kamaz (RTS: KMAZ) dropped 2.6% after net losses to Russian standards soared to 133.245 million rubles in the first quarter. State agencies said on Wednesday that they have dropped plans to float shares in an IPO by Kamaz on foreign stock exchanges and they plan to reduce the government's stake in the truck maker to 25% from 34% through anadditional issue. Region's Valery Vaisberg said Udmurtneft (RTS: UDMN) fell 7.1% to 22,300 rubles a share on news that only four companies have made bids to acquire the company - Sinopec, MOL, Sibneft and Itera (RTS: ITER)-ONGC. The results of the tender will be announced on May 6. RTS classic market trading was $63.427 million, of which $41.767 million was for Gazprom, and trading volume on the MICEX stock section was 44.957 billion rubles, led by Gazprom with 12.848 billion rubles. rm RTS$#&: EESR, ESPK, GAZP, GMKN, ITER, KMAZ, LKOH, RTKM, SBER, SIBN, SNGS, TATN, TRNF, UDMN, USBN, VSMO
