By utilising a specially developed 'martensitic-aging' stainless steel alloy that can achieve tensile strength in excess of 2000MPa (c. 265 thousand pounds per square inch breaking point), this has a strength-to-weight ratio that can take on the best in the world. 953 offers a combination of - the resilient ride of steel since small diameter tubes can be used, due to the high 'stiffness modulus' from steel-based alloys - very high tensile and impact strength for fatigue life and dent resistance - corrosion resistance, so painting and anti-rust protection are not needed - coldworked so that butted profiles down to 0.3mm wall thicknesses for low weight are possible. Fittings like rear drop-outs, BB shell and head tube will also be available in 953. We developed this alloy in conjunction with Carpenter Specialty Alloys, USA. Reynolds will work with fabricators to provide recommended production techniques, so that the challenges inherent in using an extremely hard metal can be overcome. Custom builders will be producing frames in 953 from February 2006. Benefits for the customer: Ultra strong steel, the advantage of a stainless finish and weight reduction from very thin walls. With the legendary ride of steel. 953 will complement Reynolds' other high perfomance steel alloys like 853, 631, 725 and 525 which continue to provide riders with the advantages of a steel frame.
