GESMAI

Hello, This question is more about the life in central Europe during the 18-19 Centuries. The family History of the GESMAI family says that the first Gesmai ever fled From the Spanish inquision to the U.K , married a daughter of the Abarbanel Family and later the family spred to cenral Europe. All of the Gesmay family researchers belive we are one family the question is only how we are related. A big Center of the family ( with a few trees , unfotunaly not connected yet, go back till 1600~) is RONSPERG now called Pobezovice once part of the AustroHungarian Empire. They appeared as of nowhere 520Km. away in Pilisvorosvar in Hungary around 1800.
Again is it logical for someone to leave his family and travell such a big distance?
Wouldn't it be more logical to find family members somewhere in between? say in a town 250 Km. from each side?
What kind of connections could 2 branches of a family like that keep between them on regular Basis?
In both cities in the same time I find a couple where the names of husband and wife are the same ,In one place they have a son and 3 years later in the other city startas a chain of 5 children . Could this be the same couple moving from one city to the other ? ( considering the distance and the fact that there were no modern transportation means ) . Thank you Nava Giron

In the period around 1800 the restrictions concerning Jewish life in Bohemia were in full power. The total number of the Jewish families admitted to live there was strictly determined and observed. Only one member of the family had the right to marry. There were several restrictions concerning professional activities, business, access in schools etc. That is why many Jews emigrated to Hungary and Transylvania where the restrictions were not such severe and especially were not observed very carefully because the aristocrats were interested to put in value their large estates using the services of the Jews as administrators, leaseholders, merchants or publicans. These occupations explain why Jewish families in the area were all the time in movement, changing even yearly their residence place for example moving from the estate of one master to another. The transport opportunities still existed by carriages, mail coach etc.

Maramures Jewish registrations

Shalom Professor Giamant I am interested to know about the Jews in Maramures. It frequently happened that Jews didn’t register the birth marriage or death of the family members in the central district registrations. Are there any genealogical sources other then Censuses and state or districts registrations that can help us find out more information about those families and continue with our search? Thank you Hava

Maramures

There are rabinical vital records registers for Maramureş which start around the year 1850 and are usually available until 1895 when the state registration system begins. There are also exceptions: for Sighet we have such registers preserved until 1909. Because of the destruction of the community archives in the Holocaust period these registers are preserved with large gaps. They are to be found in the regional branch of the National Archives from Baia Mare.

Shalom Prof. Gyemant, My great grandmother from my father's side was form the HALEVY-SOFFER family of Piatra Neamt. During the years, the name SOFFER or SOIFFER was added to their name, due to their profession, and the HALEVY name was set aside. Are you aware of the claim that European HALEVY Jews are descended from Spain (Jirona in northern Spain). Some of them became HORWITZ and some remained HALEVY; can you substantiate this claim ? Thank you, Elli

The Halevy and Horwitz names are frequent in Romania. I have not had the opportunity of special research on the origin of these names, but I know about a research made concerning the Horowitz families from Romania by Prof. Dr. Chaim T. Horovitz from Rehovot. His Email adress is: [email protected] Maybe he could offer more informations concerning this issue.
