Shalom Prof. Gyemant, My gggrandfather , Zvi Herman, was born to Joseph Mendel & Zurtel, 1888, in Săn Niklăus, T. Mică, today - Sinmiclaus. During a family genealogy trip, I visited Sinmiclaus and found the tombstone of Zurtel Sara, daughter of Zvi. Sadly, the tombstone was in a very bad shape. According to family tales, Joseph and Zurtel had 9 children. After she passed away he married again and had 15 children. We found the tombstone of Joseph in the Neologic cemetery in Tîrgu Mureş and found out that his father's name was also Joseph. Here are my questions: Where can I find documents concerning Mendel family from Sinmiclaus, and also futher details concerning: 1. Joseph and Zurtel and their children (I know about 4 of 9 of them). 2. Who were Joseph's parents, All I know is his father's name - Joseph. 3. Who were Zurtel's parents, All I know is her father's name - Zvi. As far as I know, in Ashkenaz families it was not conventional to name a son after his father, unless born after his father's death. I had that in Transylvania the jews inherited the custom to name the firstborn after his father from the Hungarians. Joseph Mendel was born in 1856. Do you think he is the firstborn that was named after his father according to the hungarian custom? Or in that year, the jews did not use the Hungarian custom and he is the last born son named after his dead father? Thank you

The research concerning the Mendel family is available in the rabinical registers preserved in the regional branch of the National Archives from Tîrgu Mureş for the period until 1895. For the informations after 1895 are available the state registers preserved in the townhall from Sînmiclăuş. If the marriage record comes up it will contain the name of the parents of Joseph and Zurtel. In the death record of Joseph which is probably in the state registers from Tîrgu Mureş preserved in the registry Office of the City Hall is very probable to appear the name of his parents. Is hard to say which custom was followed by the Transylvanian Jews in 1856. The registering system was at its beginnings ( it started in 1850) and the procedures were very fluide yet.

Hello Prof. Gyemant Here are few questions: 1. When did Jewish people in Romania start using surnames (the question refers mainly to "ordinary" families, not rabbinical)? 2. My great grandfather was called Mendel MENDELOVICI. He was called after his grandfather, Mendel MENDELOVICI. I can't tell for sure, but they may have been more Mendels in the family before. Following question number 1, can one tell approximately when did live "the Mendel" - the one that his son became the first one called MENDELEVICI (instead of "xxx, son of Mendel")? 3. My great great grandfather was called Gedalia DAMSKER. He was born around 1830 and left Ukraine (or somewhere else in the area) to Romania (Iasi) when he was youngster in order to avoid army. Since he was a tailor, and had a business (well known in the city) for women fashion, there is an assumption in my family that the surname DAMSKER came from is occupation and, based on the French word "Dame". Again, following question number 1 - is that assumption sounds reasonable, or is it more likely that he came to Romania with that surname? 4. The Jewish community of Iasi keeps burial registers archives, mainly of Jewish buried in the old cemetery PACURARI. I called the Jewish community but had only partial successes getting information from that archive. Do you know of any plans to digitize that information in order to make it accessible on the Web? Thanks, Oded

1. When we speak about the present Romania there are different historical provinces with different situations from the point of view we are interested in. In the provinces which were part of the Austrian Empire - Transylvania, Bukovina, Banat - the disposition to introduce German family names for the Jews was issued by Emperor Joseph II in the period 1780-1790. In the rest of Romania - Moldavia, Wallachia - it was never imposed such a measure, so that it happened upon the good will of the respective Jewish families. Those who wanted to integrate in the Romanian society took family names which corresponded in a way to the Romanian model of family names. That final - ovici instead of - son of ( sin) is an example of such a situation. Those more traditional maintained the old fashion of son of until the period of the Second WW. In the Census of the Jews taken in 1942 there are still persons with such traditional names for instance in Botoşani area. 2. So, the name Mendelovici appeared in the second half of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century instead of sin Mendel. The originary Mendel could be a person from the 18th century or even from an earlier period. 3. Damsker is not connected with a French word. It is probably connected with the place were they lived before coming in Iaşi. That final - er means originary from. I have found this name in the list of the students of the University from Iaşi. 4. Unfortunately there is not any sign of modernisation in archive matter neither in the state, nor in the community archives from Romania.

BALTINESHTER

DO YOU KNOW THE ORIGIN OF THE BALTINESHTER FAMILY NAME? I TALKED TO A BALTINESHTER WHO INSISTS ITS FROM BUKOVINA BUT I AM NOT CONVINCED.

BALTINESHTER

The name BALTINESHTER means somebody originary from the place Baltinesht ( Băltineşti in Romanian spelling). This place could have existed in Bukovina, but today there is no more any place with this name neither in the Romanian, nor in the Ukrainian part of Bukovina. There is not a Băltineşti today neither in Romania nor in the Republic of Moldavia (former Bessarabia).

Zemanek

I have not met in the registers of vital records from Romania the name ZEMANEK. It seems to be of Czech origin from the original German word Seeman which means seaman. The termination EK is frequent in Czech family names meaning the family of ...
