Were the Jews of Tirgu Neamt transferred by force to Bochush in 1944 ? Someone claims that it was so. What about the Jews of Peskani ?

Tirgu Neamt

For the fate of the Jews from Tîrgu Neamţ and Paşcani I could recommend the books and collections of documents published by Jean Ancel and which are available in the National and University Library from Jerusalem. He is the best specialist in the field and had published among others a collection of documents of 12 volumes concerning The Fate of the Romanian Jewry in the period of the Holocaust.

Shalom Prof. Gyemant, and thank you for your willingness to answer our questions According to family lore, my grandmother Batia Berta PESS or PESH was 6 years old in 1894 when she emmigrated with her sister Stephania and their divorced mother, Sara Rosa, from Galicia to Transylvania. Sara Rosa married Moshe LEINER and they lived in Orikan, where they had children. My questions are: How common were divorces at this period and what could have been the reasons for that ? Are there any resources about emmigration from Galicia to Transylvania at that period; would it be possible to find Batia Berta's father's name ? Where can one find documents about the marriage of Sara Rosa and Moshe LEINER ? Sara Rosa in buried in Hatseg, on her headstone it does not state her father's name. Would it be possible to find burial registrations ? If yes, where can they be found ? Lastly, if I forgot to ask about other resources, I will be glad to learn about those other resources.

Uricani ולא Orikan

Uricani

Uricani

Divorces were as common as in other communities and the reasons were similar. It was not any restriction and it existed a special tax paid to the rabbi for divorce. There are not special records concerning the emmigration and immigration. The name of the father of Batia Berta could come up from her marriage of death record where the name of the parents was usually mentioned. The mentioned marriage record could be found in the state registers of vital records for Uricani preserved in the Town Hall of Uricani. Burial registers could be found in the Jewish Community archive from Deva or the mentioned death record could be found in the state registers for Hatseg preserved in the Town Hall of Hatseg.

Shalom Prof. Gyemant, My great-grandmother told that her family was from the village of NAZNA, and so were her grandfather and grandmother. I did find her father's grave. He was Avraham Itshak ben Yakov Hacohen, born in 1854. Following my research about the family, I got information that his brother, Dov Bearl Bernahard FRITSCH, was one of the first Jews that got a permit to live in Marosvásárhely. the person who gave the information heard it from his father, who, as a child, saw the certificate. My questions are: What do you know about the origins of the name FRITSCH, and its meaning? Would it be possible to trace a copy of the permit to live in Marosvásárhely ? Where can I find vital records (b.m.d.) in order to obtain data on Yakov & Sara FRITSCH (the first people on my tree, at the moment), their parents and their children ? Did Jews need a transit permit at the time, and where can I trace such permits ? Thank you very much, Anat

FRITSCH

a. The name Fritsch is of German origin but it has not in this form a certain meaning. Maybe it is a distorted form of Frisch meaning fresh which is also a frequent Jewish family name. b. I have not seen ever in my archival researches such permits and in Transylvania was not a custom to issue neither permits for establishment nor permits for transit. I have seen only lists of Jewish people for expulsion from different cities including Marosvasarhely ( Tîrgu Mureş) from the period before 1848. c. The rabinical registers of vital records for Tîrgu Mureş are preserved in the regional branch of the National Archives from Tîrgu Mureş beginning with the year 1850. Beginning with 1895 we have state registers preserved in the Registry Office of the City Hall Tîrgu Mureş. In addition if you would like research in that area please contact me on the Email address: [email protected]

Bella Fritsch served in the Austro-Hungarian army and received 4 medals: one gold, 2 silver and one bronze medal (picture attached). I also attach Bella's picture, maybe his uniform will reveal something concerning him. Today I received the photocopy of the document of the medal. My questions are: The unit in which he served? For what did he receive the medals? Is there a possibility of knowing in what battles he participated? Did the medals provided him with some benefits (someone told me that he was eligible for a titleparallel to Sir in England, which is inherited).
