A response to Miri Miri

I will be glad to have responses to my questions: 1. Do all HaLevy families in Europe come from the same source, Spanish exile NOT NECESSARILY ? What is the difference between the HaLevy families and Levy families SEE MY COMMENT BELOW ABOUT THE SPELLING OF JEWISH NAMES.? > 2. What is the origin of the people bearing the family name of Vjenfeld ? ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT WHEN DEALING WITH JEWISH FAMILY NAMES, SPELLING IS NOT RELEVANT. ONLY THE SOUND IS. THE WORD VJENFELD CAN BE SPELLED MANY DIFFERENT WAYS, BUT THEY ALL MEAN [IN YIDDISH] A FIELD OF GRAPES. FOR THAT REASON, PEOPLE BEARING THIS NAME MAY HAVE COME FROM MANY DIFFERENT PLACES AND THEY ARE PROBABLY NOT ALL RELATED. 3. Where from came the Asjkenazi Jews that settled in Yugoslavia- Serbia ? FOR DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT THE JEWS OF THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA SEE THE RECENTLY PUBLISHED AVOTAYNU GUIDE TO JEWISH GENEALOGY. IN SERBIA, JEWS LIVED PRIMARILY IN BELGRADE WHICH WAS MIXED ASHKENAZI AND SEPPHARDI. SIGNIFICANT NUMBERS OF JEWS BEGAN TO ETTLE IN BELGARD ONLY IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY. THEY UNDOUBTEDLY CAME FROM MANY DIFFERENT NEIGHBORING AREAS AND NOT ONE SINGLE PLACE THE ARCHIVE OF SERBIA WAS ESTABLISHED PRIOR TO THE CREATED OF YUGOSLAVIA AND HAS MANY NATIONAL COLELCTIONS, ESPECIALLY THE CENSUSES FOR 1863, 1905 AND 1910. THE ARCHIVE IN NOVI SAD HAS A VAST COLLECTION OF RECORDS, 1826-95. MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF BELGARD HAS A MICROFILM OF THE COMPLETE SET OF BRITH, MARRIAGE AND DEATH RECORDS OF THE JEWS OF BELGARD, 1866-1941. TRY THE E-MAIL ADDRESS [email protected] . IF THAT DOES NOT WORK, TRY WRITING TO THE COMMUNITY AT 110000 BELGRAD, KRALJA PETRA 71a, THIRD FLOOR. TELEPHONE: 381-11-625-359. THE U.S. HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM HAS MICROFILMED OTHER JEWISH RECORDS FROM BELGRADE CAPTURED BY THE RUSSIANS AND HELD IN THE OSOBYI ARCHIVES IN MOSCOW. THEY MAY BE FREELY CONSULTED AT THE MUSEUM IN WASHINGTON. THE WHEREABOUTS OF OTHER JEWS RECORDS FROM SERBIA ARE NOT KNOWN AT THIS TIME BUT IF YOU KNOW A TOWN OF INTEREST, YOU SHOULD WRITE TO THE MAYOR AND ASK

Hello, Sallyann! As for some of my family branches - all I have is family-stories. All the heroes of those stories lived about 150 years ago, so I can't say any one who told me the stories personaly knew them. Do you use the severe attitude: nothing is to be documented in the family tree until it's prooved by a valid document, or do you use the lenient approach: all is to be documented in the family tree, unless otherwise is discovered? 10-x, Arnon

Response to Arnon

Dear Arnon, I'm a firm believer that there is a "grain of truth" in every bubbe meise--but finding that grain can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. (Too many proverbs; forgive me). I do both. I keep track of what is documented at the same time that I keep another section of "maybes." For example, because my maiden name is relatively uncommon, I long ago sent queries with every Amdur in the U.S. telephone directory. I also "collected" Amdurs everywhere. At first, of course, I could not connect these people to me, but over the years, I have managed to work out many, many relationship. Along the way, I have also connected lots of people to others who I can't yet connect to me. As for those long-ago heroes of your stories...The conventional genealogical wisdom which I am sure you know is that you should work systematically backward in time and that sooner or later you will probably connect to those folks. Then you may, or may not, be able to verify the tales. By the way, about 25 years ago I was told a tale about my grandmother's eldest brother. Don't even remember who told it to me, but it stayed in my mind. Since my grandmother died before I was born, it certainly didn't come from her. Two months ago, a second cousin of mine who lives in Haifa, and whom I came to know through my research, visited me here in Washington. (We have become good friends). She was born in a DP camp after the war. Miraculously, both of her parents had survived although her sisters and grandmother died in Auschwitz. Judith was telling me some of the stories her parents had told her. I strongly suggested that she preserve them for her children---and then, out of the blue, she told the story I had heard. But not exactly as I had heard it. Now for the first time, my grain of truth became a whole loaf of bread. Hershkowitz sounds like a Maramaroser name to me. If it is, let me know. Maybe my cousin Judith (Sziget) can help. Sallyann

More to Arnon

Dear Arnon, As I was preparing lunch, I realized that I had omitted something important. I definitely do believe that it is important for us to try our best not to promulgate inaccurate information--and that's devilishly hard to not to do. I also believe that it would be important for a body well-researched, well-documented Jewish genealogical family trees to exist--for use in such things as genetic research. To read more about that, see if you can get a copy of the latest {fall 2004) AVOTAYNU. Read the lead article by Gary Mokotoff and myself, entitled "The Next Step: Jewish Genealogy Goes Academic." That's where you'll read my ideas about what we should [ideally] aim for. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it is important to be clear about how we "know" what is it that we think we know--to cite references whether it is family lore or a document from an archive. And speaking of documents--we all learned as children not to believe everything we read. Just because something exists in written form doesn't mean it is true, of course. Sallyann

Dear Sallyann, Was it possible for a a person in Congress Poland to be born, married and died with no civil registration? I have constructed my family tree back to the early 1700s for some of my lines. However, for one of my great-grandfathers I could not find any record. All I have found are birth records of three of his children (out of 13, in Klimontow, Poland – registered under their father’s name). My great-grandfather was born circa 1860 in Poland, and was married circa 1885. I do have the birth record of his wife (Pinczow, 1863), as well as her death record (Skarzysko-Kamienna, 1934, where her husband name is mentioned). My great-grandfather died a few months after her, but no death record was found in the possible archives. Their marriage record was also not found in any of about 15 possible archives that I have checked. In his son’s marriage record (Lodz, 1913), my great-grandfather is noted as a permanent resident of Gorki (near Klimontow). To my knowledge, no books of residents survived for this area. I find it odd that none of his vital record was found in the archives where he or his wife lived. Was it possible to lead life in Poland in those years without any registration? Any other suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks a lot for your reply T-A <div/> שלום סליאן, האם יתכן שאדם נולד, נישא ונפטר בקונגרס פולין ללא כל רישום אזרחי?

A response to Talia Olav

Dear Talia, Just because no records can be found doesn't mean that none ever existed. As you note, the records for Gorki don't seem to have survived. Are you sure that you have checked all possible sources? Have you consulted Miriam Weiner's website www.routestoroots.org to see if anything else such as land or census records exist)? Have you looked at Fay Bussbang's article about Russia (Congress) Poland in the new Avotaynu Guide to Jewish Genealogy? From what you have written, for example, I can't tell if you checked domicle books (also known as books of residents) or merely vital (birth, marriage and death) records. Don't forget that Jews of this era did everything possible to keep sons from being registered for fear of their being drafted into the Russian army. The various ruses they employed are legendary. I for example have never found any Polish archival records for my grandfather who was born in Congress Poland in 1885. Only when he was past 90 years old did he tell me his real family name! He had bought false papers to avoid being drafted into the Polish army and although he emigrate to the U.S. in 1904, he kept the secret almost until his death. Sallyann

Magnate

Shalom, First question - A question regarding Magnate: In 1740 Yozef Potozki was one of the owners of Tarnopol. My family resided there at the time. How canI get documents that confirm it ? Is there an address I can turn to ? Second question In 1700 there was a settlement of Jews in Cachtice (today Slovakia and in the past Hungary). My assumption is that my mother's ancetors already settled there and were under the patronage of Count Franz Pongratz as Protectorates. How can I confirm or exclude this assumption ? Are ther any documents and where can I find them ? Third question Same as question number 2, but relating the cities Kock & Lodz in Poland. Many thanks !

re:Tarnopol. If you don't have any documents, how do you know that your family resided in Tarnopol in 1740? The 1765 Polish census may help--if you can locate it. I suggest that you post your query on the Galicia Special Interest Group digest which may be accessed from the JewishGen home page at www.jewishgen.org. Also look at the JewishGen Family Finder for other genealogists who are doing research in Tarnopol. Write and ask them about their experience getting documents. 2. Why do you assume that your relatives were living in Cachtice in 1700? Is that oral history or do you have something in else? Most Ashkenazi Jews did not hav fixed, hereditary family names (unless they were rabbinic families) until forced by law to adopt them. The Austro-Hungarian Empire was the first to require this--in 1787. Prior to that time it might be difficult to trace your family, although not so difficult in a small place with few Jewish residents. The Mormons have been given permission to film birth, marriage and death records (including Jewish records) in Slovakia. Consult their online catalog at www.familysearch.org. Unfortunately, searching the catalogue properly is not easy. Instructions for doing it may be found in the Avotaynu Guide to Jewish Genealogy chapter on the Mormon Family History Library. Slovakia has a well-developed system of regional archives. The Guide chapter on Slovakia offers details of how to access them.

1.At the beginning of the 19th century - could a family move freely between Krakow and Congress Poland? (The same for other parts of Galicia). 2.In the shed of the Galician limitations regarding Jewish families and boys particularly- could a family from Krakow or Galicia register one son there, and another in Congress Poland? 3. The same for a family living in Congress Poland, and registering a son in Galicia. 4. Was it practical to do so, and was it common? Many thanks T-A

These questions require a good knowledge of Polish history. Although I am not expert on that, I can give you some general answers and suggest places to look further. 1. For some years early in the 19th century (after the partitions of Poland at the end of the 18th century), Krakow was a free and independent city. Congress Poland, sometimes called Russian Poland, was of course, part of the Czarist Russian Empire. As a general rule, Jews (and probably others) were not allowed to leave any part of the Empire without satisfying three requirements: showing proof that they (if men) had satisfied their military requirements, that they had paid their taxes and that they were in "good standing" with the authorities." Of course, what was legally required and what was actually done were not always the same. Witness, the so-called "Jewish underground" by which so many Jews fled Russia. What rules Russia had for allowing people into its realm I don't know. What I do know, however, is that before the partitions Russia had a long-standing prohibiton against Jews living in its country. I don't know anything about the rules that independent Krakow might have had for movement across its borders, but just on the basis of what we know about Russia, I would assume that a family could not move "freely." 2. I am aware of limitations on Jewish families in other parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but not particularly in Galicia. I suggest also that she pose these questions to JewishGen's Galicia SIG, but specifying the exact towns of interest to you.. For most of the period between 1772 and the end of World War I Krakow was part of Galicia and thus of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Congress Poland, of course, belonged to the Russian Empire. I don't know how a family could register the birth of its children in two different empires unless one son was born while the family lived in one place and another son was born after the family moved across the border. But much depends on details. I assume from your question that you have reason to think that such registrations did occur? Where and when? Since I have never heard of a situation such as you describe, I don't believe that it was common

A Rabbi from Brest Litovsk

Shalom My great grandfather – Lejb CZARNA - was a Rabbi in Brisk ( Brest Litovsk , Belarus) . My uncle who visited him in the 20th, on his way to Israel, said that he had officiated a Synagogue there. His sons studied Rabanut but just one of them stayed there and was a Rabbi. My grandfather married a girl from Rovno Vohlyn and that’s were they lived. In the Brest Ghetto Passport Archive, there is his son CZARNO, Abram-Iser (1878-1941) and his family, but Lejb CZARNA isn't there. 1. Are there list of rabbis from Brisk (not official town rabbis)? How can I find anything about Lejb CZARNA? 2. Since the sons studied Rabanut, in which yeshiva could they have been students and have students lists survived? 3. Rovno is far from Brest . Does the marriage indicate that the 2 families were relatives? 4. The surname CZARNA is the feminine form of the surname, that's how they called themselves, does it indicates that the surname started with a woman? Thank you
