Dear all,

This weekend will officially mark the start of 51st IWC, with counters heading out to wetlands across Africa, Asia, Australasia, the Caribbean and Europe. FYI, there are some special counting efforts which will kick off this weekend including:

- In the East Atlantic flyway, where efforts are being made to cover all major wetlands along the flyway. This will provide valuable data for species and site conservation. Attached is a poster (en français et en anglais) with more information about this undertaking.
- A similar effort in many countries around the Indian Ocean. This will provide urgently needed data for the West Asian/East African and the Central Asian flyways, where loss of coastal habitats has precipitated an alarming decline in coastal bird populations.
- Across North Africa, where national coordinators are also organising extended counts in their countries to help improve knowledge on the status of migratory waterbird populations in this important region.

As ever our thanks to all national coordinators and your networks for your vital contributions to the IWC, and also to organisations such as the Wadden Sea Flyway Initiative and Tour du Valat for their support and facilitation of these special initiatives.

And finally, very best wishes for your final preparations and counts!
